Rochechouart

Rochechouart, sub-prefecture of 3000 inhabitants, is an attractive place in its own right, but the medieval streets pale beside the impressive castle, situated overlooking the wooded valley below.

The castle dates from the 13th century, and now houses an important contemporary art museum - “le musée départemental d’Art contemporain”. Collections are by no means restricted to French artists, and range from the 1960s to today.

Rochechouart is of particular interest to geologists. 214 million years ago, a massive meteorite, 1.5 km in diameter, impacted close by. After all this time, sadly, nothing remains of the crater, but given that it exterminated life over a radius of 500 kilometres, it must have been impressive!
