The Creuse is one of the three departments of the Limousin. It is named after the Creuse River. Creuse is one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was created from the former province 'la Marche'.

The Creuse is located on the edge of the Massif Central and is permeated by the Creuse River and its tributaries. The river is dammed at several locations both for water supply and hydroelectricity generation.

The landscape is principally rolling hills intersected by often steep river valleys. There are no commercial vineyards and much of the farming is Limousin beef cattle and sheep.

The main tourist attractions are the tapestries of Aubusson, the castles of Villemonteix and Boussac and the Wolves…..!
