Beaulieu Sur Dordogne

Beaulieu sur Dordogne in the Correze department, as well as being an extremely pretty place, has a near-Mediterranean microclimate, which has meant that during the 20th century it gradually turned from being a fishing village into the production centre for 80% of the strawberries grown in the department.

Each year around 2,000 tonnes of the fruit are grown here, beginning in mid-April with the ripening of the garriguette, a little very sweet strawberry, and continuing with the main crop celebrated by a festival every May. The festival centres around the attempt by the inhabitants of Beaulieu (the "Bellocois") to break the record for the biggest strawberry tart, and the biggest basket of strawberries.
